  • What is a URL?

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address that we use when we want to find exactly where something is located online.

Back in the early days on the internet, a URL most often took you directly to a file located on a server. That was when most web pages were static and just had plain text on them.

Now, in the days of online stores, blogs with comment sections and special services that are offered online, URL's are much more than the location of a file. They can correspond to database commands, certain input fields and even executable files.

A URL can be broken down into a few parts. It takes the following format:

Let's take a look at what those parts mean.

Protocol This is the protocol, or method, that you use to connect to the resource you indicate. Usually, this is http (HyperText Transfer Protocol), but URL's can also use a number of other methods to connect to sites such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and https (Secure HTTP).
Hostname This is the domain name - it shows what server the resource is located on.
Other Information This can show things like what folder (or directory) on the server the URL points to - so if you have a main folder (or a main site) that's called myawesomesite and a folder inside it called myawesomeblog, the URL that you use to find that resource might be http://myawesomesite.com/myawesomeblog.
  • What is a TLD?

A TLD means Top-Level Domain. It identifies the most general part of the domain name in an Internet address. It is also the highest domain level in the hierarchical Domain Name System.

The TLD is the last part of the domain name, in other words, the last label of a fully qualified domain name. For example, in the fully-qualified domain name mydomain.com, the .com will be the TLD.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible for managing most top-level domains and operating the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). TLDs are also referred to as domain extensions.

    Types of TLDs

We can distinguish the following main groups of top-level domains:

Country-Code Top-Level Domains ccTLD Two-letter domains established for countries or territories, like .AU for Australia or .UKfor United Kingdom. Some countries only allow citizens to register domains under their ccTLD.
Generic Top-Level Domains gTLD Top-level domains with three or more characters which are not generally associated with any particular country, such as .COM or .NET.

Some TLDs do not allow registrations at the first level. An example of this is .AU where it is currently not possible to register yourdomain.au. Instead you can register your domain at what is called the second level. With .AU this means you can register a .com.au.net.au.org.au.asn.au or .id.au

  • How many Characters can a Domain Name have?

Domain names can have up to 63 characters, including the letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9, and hyphens. Some domain names do have restrictions on minimum characters.

You could even choose something like can-have-up-to-63-characters.com for your domain name.

You will sometimes find references to 67 characters in domain names. This includes the dot and the letters c-o-m as an additional 4 characters.

The valid characters for use in all domain name are:

    • Any of the letters a to z (for example, abcdefg.com).
    • Any numbers 0 to 9 (for example, 911.com).
    • You may also use a hyphen (-) (for example, place-hyphens-here.com).
    • The domain can be a combination of numbers, letters and hyphens.
    • The domain can begin and end in a number (for example, 1to1000.com).

A domain name is your unique address on the Internet and says a lot about who you are and what you do. We recommend to all customers keeping the domain short and not using any hyphens for best results.

  • What does Registry, Registrar and Registrant mean?

Registry, Registrar and Registrant are industry standard terms used to identify the owner of a domain (Registrant), the domain accredited supplier (Registrar) and the domain records manager (Registry).

Registry A registry is an organization that supports a registry database for the TLDs. Every TLD has only one registry.
Registrar A registrar is an organization that is empowered and accredited to provide registration services for the top-level domains and serves as the middle-man between the registry and the registrant. Registrars can offer services that help clients build websites and develop their web presence.
Registrant A registrant is any company or person who purchases a Domain Name. When a registrant registers a domain name and signs a contract with the registrar, they are the legal owner of a domain name for a specific period of time.
  • What is Cloud Hosting?

Cloud Hosting is a type of Web Hosting that uses the latest innovations in server technology to provide hosting for your site that is safer, faster, and easier to use than traditional hosting.

Imagine that the resources that your site needs in order to function are like water. It used to be that you needed to have your own well (a server, in this analogy) to provide it – either that or share a well with some other people. Now you can have access to a public water main and you can use as much or as little as you want.

By distributing computing resources over a huge network of fast servers, Cloud Hosting has made it possible for you to have access to a huge pool of resources and split the price with other users. It gives you immense power at a fraction of the cost.

    Cloud Hosting is Stable

Because your site isn’t located on a single server, it’s impossible for a single power outage to make it unavailable. Our hosting is guaranteed 99.9% uptime, and that’s partly due to our state-of-the-art cloud hosting technology.

    Cloud Hosting is Fast

A very fast server might have 4 gigabytes of DDR3 memory. That’s fantastic and works well for big, intensive sites and services, but for the average website it’s not only overkill, it’s also much more expensive. However, if your hosting has too little memory, that’s also a big problem since your site might run slowly or not respond.

The solution? Have a pool of available memory that your site can draw on if necessary and leave if it doesn’t. It’s the optimal choice between performance and the low prices you can expect from us. Our Cloud Hosting solutions give 300% faster speeds than HDD hosting provides.

    Cloud Hosting is Easy

Like all of our products at Crazy Domains, our Cloud Hosting is managed by a team of experts. Enjoy the benefits of their knowledge and skills in setting up and managing your Cloud Hosting account. It’s really easy.

Get the power and speed of our Cloud Hosting for yourself. Click on Web Hosting in the menu at the top of the page right now to get started. Upgrade an existing hosting account or create a new one.

  • Do I need Web Hosting?

So you want a website. But what does that actually mean? How do you get from having an idea to putting out a finished online product? The task seems huge - the jargon, buzzwords and technological know-how all look really complicated. There's an easy solution, though. Let's start at the beginning.

    Getting Started - the Basics

A website is made out of files. Every time you load a webpage, you are accessing those files, yet they don't have to be stored on your computer. The way that they can get to your browser is that a server (a type of very powerful computer) sends them to you on-demand. You need access to a server to make your website visible online.

But what's the difference between your computer and a server? You can just keep your files where they are and send them out whenever people want right from your laptop, right?

    Well, no.

    Great Power and Great Responsibility

It's a nice idea, but home computers just aren't powerful enough. Think about it - you can have hundreds of people on a website, all clicking different things, looking at your blog, searching for your phone number, and the site still works. That's because the server it's on can respond fast enough. Think about what your computer would do if you tried to run a hundred programs on it at once. Not pretty, right?

You'd also need a super-fast internet connection and an agreement with your ISP that you'd be using it 24/7. If someone on the other side of the world wants to see your site, you probably want to let them. That means the server has to be up and running all the time. Sleep easy - we at Crazy Domains have a 99.9% uptime guarantee so you know your site is always running.

Those are just some of the reasons you need Web Hosting if you want a good website. So why get your hosting from Crazy Domains?

  • What is Web Hosting?

When you want to create a website, there are two major things you need before you can move further. One is a domain name. The other is Web Hosting.

A website is made of files, much like the ones stored on your computer. Whenever you go a website, you’re seeing those files.

The way you can see those files is because they’re stored – or hosted – on a server. A server is just a big, powerful computer that your browser asks to send it the files that it wants to see – the site that you asked for when you entered the domain name into your browser. The domain name is what the website is called, and the Web Hosting is where its files are stored.

So hosting is a necessary part of having a website. You can have a domain name and you can have the files that make up your website, but without Web Hosting it won’t be connected to the internet and nobody will be able to see it.

    Choosing Your Web Hosting

So what kind of Web Hosting do you need? What makes Web Hosting right for you?

    1. First, you need to make sure your hosting has enough memory to hold all of the files that make up your site. That includes things like email, pictures, videos – all of that stuff has to be stored on your Web Hosting, or your site visitors won’t be able to see it. For a small site – a personal blog or a short description of your business or services with a telephone number – you won’t need very much storage. If you want something big, though, you’re going to need a lot more space. Luckily, at Crazy Domains you can start off small and upgrade as you need – it’s really easy.
    2. Second, you need to make sure that your hosting is reliable. Your hosting has to be able to deliver files at any time, because someone might come to your site at any time. We don’t like to brag, but at Crazy Domains we have a 99% uptime guarantee, meaning that your hosting is assured to always be able to handle requests from your visitors.
    3. Third, make sure your hosting is secure. This is a no-brainer – there are lots of different ways that cyber attackers can break into unsecured sites and steal data, vandalise the site, or put viruses in your content. Of course, at Crazy Domains security is our watchword. We also offer increased Site Protection for those who like to sleep extra easy at night.
    4. Fourth, your hosting has to be fast. Nobody likes to sit and stare at an empty browser while they wait for a site to load. Our blazing fast cloud network makes sure that this doesn’t happen.
    5. Lastly, and something we take very seriously at Crazy Domains, is that your hosting provider (that’s us!) should always be there for you. Our support is available round the clock to make sure that if you ever have a problem it gets solved right away. You have better things to do than try to deal with some technical problem when there are qualified professionals who are happy to do it for you.

    Getting Started

So if you’re ready to get started with your very own site, click Web Hosting in the menu at the top of the page and we’ll get you started instantly. You'll be able to choose the plan that's right for you - don't worry, you can upgrade it whenever you want.
